Surgeon Fishin'
Published in Mass Market Paperback by J & J Breckenridge Publishing (01 April, 1998)
Author: Jack D. Breckenridge

The best laughter I've had in a long time!
After I would read a section of the book that made me laugh out loud I would have to read it to my husband who would share in my laughter once again! Jack has a way with words that make the characters and situations come alive! I recently loaned my book to my sister-in-law who had nose surgery and warned her not to laugh too hard and tear out her stitches!

Surgeon Fishin' is on the top of my best sellers list!
Breckenridge has done it AGAIN! I didn't think it was possible to find a book as funny as his first book, "Pumpkins Are Orange" but this is without a doubt the funniest book I have ever read. Some of my most wonderful memories are of the days when my own father and I went sturgeon fishing together. There is no other fishing like sturgeon fishing as you wait on the other end of the line in a constant state of anxiety! Surgeon Fishin' offers it's readers the time and space to get outside themselves and laugh until they cry. A truly "must" read and a great gift for anyone. I can't wait for his third book!

Laughed throughout the whole book
This book is a must for everyone to read, that enjoys laughing from cover to cover. Should be made a required reading book for all Fish and Game Departments of all of our States. This book is not just for the fisherman. It will be enjoyed by everyone that reads it.

Jesse Tree Devotions: A Family Activity for Advent
Published in Paperback by Augsburg Fortress Publishers (March, 1985)
Authors: Marilyn Bredkenridge and Marilyn S. Breckenridge
Average review score:

An easy, yet meaningful family Advent activity
My family has been using this book for the past five years and we have found it to be a wonderful family devotional for the Advent season. At first, the kids were just interested in coloring the daily 'leaf' and gluing it onto the paper 'tree'; now the older kids are interested in the readings and actually take part in the discussions while the youngest ones get out the crayons and glue. We have considered giving it up, since it does require purchasing a new book each year (the content does not change with each year, but the pages are colored and cut to make the tree). Our kids would not even consider it! This has become a very enjoyable Advent tradition for our whole family. I have usually had to 'special order' this book, so I would consider purchasing a few books at a time so as not to be caught unprepared when Advent arrives. The book also makes a nice gift.

365 Simple Science Experiments With Everyday Materials
Published in Hardcover by Black Dog & Leventhal Pub (March, 1997)
Authors: E. Richard Churchill, Louis V. Loeschnig, Muriel Mandell, Frances W. Zweifel, Judy Breckenridge, Anthony D. Fredericks, and Louis V. Loesching
Average review score:

When your kids say :" I'm bored", this is the book for them!
The experiments in this book are very basic and simple fun activities that are easy to follow and which children -even adults- will enjoy. The book simplifies and explains many fundamental scientific concepts that we encounter daily. The scope of these experiments is very wide , from daily science to weather, chemistry,... which are all implemented with very readily available items. This is a book that will keep inquisitive children motivated and busy for hours, they will especially love the science tricks. The second book : "365 More Science Experiments with Everyday Materials" complements this book. One should get them both!

Fabulously fun resource!
I purchased this book for the science division of our home schooling studies. It is laid out very well and it's easy to understand.

Using materials most people have around the house you can simply flip to the beginning and follow the headings for ideas.

What can you use straws for? Try out the section on "Clutching at Straws", make an Oboe, balance scale, spear a potato, etc.

Would you like to know other uses for lemon juice? Start on page 36. Keep going- check out soap suds, strings, paper cups, experiments with temperature, etc.

Basically you get it, you could spend many great minutes or hours teaching your kids through hands on learning.

Many of these can be done by an older child with very little help- a perfect solution to the "I'm bored" problem.

Please- turn of the TV, electronic games. etc. and let them use their brains- actively.

This is a wonderful book, one that every household would benefit from.

Really simple
I've picked up many books which claim to demonstrate science with "everyday materials." Most times the "everyday materials" are not something I keep on hand. Like cheesecloth. Who keeps cheesecloth on hand? But the demonstrations in this book really are simple and really do include basic household supplies. I've used the book with my five year old and have found the demonstrations and explanations to be thorough enough to engage his interest. And I've enjoyed myself too!

Pumpkins are orange
If you have grown Atlantic Giants you can find yourself in this book, and if you haven't you may never want too. But Dr. Jack has this laughter thing down. I could not stop laughing out loud. This is a must read book because you will never forgive yourself for not reading it

Denis

Tears of laughter!
One of the funniest books I've read in many years! You won't be able to put it down once you start reading. Jack's other book, "Surgeon Fishin'", is as hilarious as this one! I am having laughter withdrawals till the next book!

A truly delightful book, not like any other I have read.
I started laughing half way through the first page of Pumpkins are Orange and I didn't stop until the very last page. My kids would peek in my bedroom to see what I was laughing about and then shake their heads and walk away convinced mom had lost it. This book is so full of refreshing original humor. I have never known anyone with ideas like this one. I found myself incredulous at some of his schemes, and soon found myself talking to the book. The characters are so real that you feel like they are friends and neighbors. Jack draws you into his little world and you are enchanted. The book races along and you can't put it down because you just have to know what is going to happen next. My deepest sympathies to his wife who obviously loves him dearly, but has to endure the consequences of his overactive imagination and zeal. It is a truly delightful book and I can't wait to read another book by Jack Breckenridge. He is definately one of a kind. and you can't help but love him.

365 More Simple Science Experiments With Everyday Materials

Average review score:

Not scientific, but a 'cookbook' of entertaining activities
The activites in this book are enjoyable for children to perform, but there is very little science taught.

My daughter very much enjoys performing the activities listed, however, I need to heavily supplement the material and description given in order to provide any scientific explaination of what she is doing. Additionally, the scientific method is completely missing from the 'experiments.' The simple activites are prsented in a "do it and observe" form, with no specific idea or result which is tested by the activity.

A good book for entertaining activities, but not for teaching science.

Simplified practical science for kids
I have got both these books (The first one being 365 Simple Science Experiments with everyday materials) for my kids (aged 8-12) and they find the experiments extremely fun and interesting because they don't need much adult intervention when trying them out , it helped them at school by providing them with a good background of practical science; the kind you encounter everyday but take for granted. It is written for kids, not for adults who then have to explain it to kids. The book covers many scientific concepts to do with physics, time, nature and space.

Simply Magnificient!
I loved it! The experiments are so much fun! They were interesting and fascinating! A *Must* for any scientific youngster.

What Color Is Your God?: Multi Cultural Education in the Church
Published in Paperback by Scripture Pr Pubns (October, 1994)
Authors: James Breckenridge and Lillian Breckenridge
Average review score:

a brief overview...
A breif overview of how different ethnic groups approcah the Church and it's activities, but mostly focused on logistical concerns and not on worship style, faith, male vs. female perspectives, etc. within the different churches (ethnic groups). However, goo dfor group discussion.

Valuable Material, But Not Leisurely Reading.
James & Lillian Breckenridge attempt to enlighten believers on the task of taking the Gospel to the "melting pot" (A term that the authors would probably eschew) of humanity we define as "cultures" while putting our own cultural expectations in perspective. Though "culture" can be defined in many different ways, the Breckenridges not only merely shed light on communicating Biblical truth, but rather "spot light" the people the message is to be taken to. The objective being to widen our understanding and sensitivity.

To their credit, they manage to bring a myriad of social science terminology giving the reader/non-expert a firm handle on how to make use of their expertise as to obey the commission of the Lord Jesus Christ of preaching the Gospel to the ends of a diversified world.

If you're like me, the social sciences can come across as abstract because of the blizzard of jargon used by experts. Seriously, none of us pragmatically apply, relate or communicate to people generally in scientific terms so this material like this can understandly have a scholarly feel. Unless your either trained in or you have an interest in these disciplines, parts of the book may read more like text book material. However, taking the time to understand what the Breckenridges' are communicating offer a foundation of importance in grasping their concepts which unfold and build as you progress.

As a side note, two of the more important questions asked by the authors is "How do we arrive at our own self-understanding as Christians?" and "How do we interface with the culture of those who come from different worlds?" In practical terms, these questions address that there is an Anglo perspective of church in general, but it ISN'T the only perspective. Ultimately it is incumbent on us as believers to be listerners in addition to being proclaimers.

Though there the face of America is multi-cultural, the book specifically features Hispanic-Americans, African-Americans, Native-Americans and Asian-American. The authors offer a clear definition of how these groups are "defined" in the context of the material. The groups are magnified to examine and understand social characteristics; from background to dynamics but putting a "general" focus on people in a sensitive manner.

I use the term "general" with much trepidation because you simply can't generalize a group or people for that matter. Case in point, "studies" (however you want to define scientific research) can show tendencies of a given group lets say in the area of "education" as a whole, but there are sure to be exceptions because of personality differences. Rather than accusing this book of furthering the distaste for the "politically correct" mentality or trite sensitivity, I say upfront that this isn't what this material is about or intended to do. Sensitivity is very much a part of what this book represents but this isn't written in an idealistic manner where you're encouraged to be all things to everyone (which is impossible), but to be understanding of the people we take the salvation message to and still be within your personality.

Though the Gospel is the theme of our proclaimation, the Brekenridges offer the purpose, reason and method of coming to terms with a multicultural society. Making the Gospel the message unto itself, and not to be molded solely from the Anglo prespective. As mentioned in the book and perhaps depending on the person, faith (theological knowledge and trust through relationship) in the correct Biblical perspective governs our reason (how we as believer's function in our world day to day) but in addition to theological knowledge, having an understanding of where people are at or where they come from, can help us communicate the Good News effectively and personably.

A quick review through the Gospels demonstrates that Christ Himself being very personable. He was always interested where people were "at" so to speak AND where they came from. Ultimately, those factors shaped their circumstances and "made" them who they were when they met Christ. Christ said things that spoke into their very circumstances, demonstrating the importance of reaching the person, in fact Jesus didn't babble the same scripted lines from one person to the next. Today as well meaning as we may be, it can be easy to get focused on the "American-way-of-life Church Checklist" and have higher regard for the system and not the people. Please, don't misread. We need a structered system of some kind, I understand that, but there is a underlying theme of balance not directly stated in the book. The clay is to be molded, but God DIRECTS the molding, not us per se although we have a hand in it as His church.

One brief thing comment about the book. If a revision is ever in the works, lightening the terminology and overall mood would be good. A better part of the book can sound like a text book, but given the subject that's probably inevitable. Unfortunately, as valid and valuable as the material is, this isn't necessarily a compliment.

I don't doubt that most of you can understand the information, but this material would be a benefit to anyone and I fear that the reading style would discourage many from maintaining interest. This objective of this material is too valuable

Great Ministry Tool for 21st Century
I bought a copy of this book used a few years back. It was perhaps the best book I ever found in a discount bin.
I work in cross-cultural ministry, mostly with Asian Americans. This book was very helpful to me in the work that I do. It covers most of the races that are currenly in America and covers the strengths and faults that are in each of them. This book also tells what must be done to present the gospel to each of them without changing their ethnic culture. I think this feature of the book is excellent because far too often white America thinks that when minority races get saved, they must adopt "White Values." Not true! Each ethnic group in the world that has Christians celebrate Jesus in a way that is unique to their own culture. When we evangelize other groups outside of our own culture, when should remember this.
I'd call this book a must for all pastors, evangelists, and other Christian leaders of all levels in America.
